Bedbugs are a huge problem in North American urban areas because cities are so heavily populated. These bugs are easily transferable, they do not cling to our skin but instead stick to our belongings (clothes, purses, luggage, etc). Typical places where they can be found are in motels and hotels, other households, public transportation, hospitals, and other buildings.
They are flattened, oval shaped bugs with a light brown to reddish-brown colour. Their average body length ranges from about 1-5 millimeters. Bedbugs essentially feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals. The common bedbugs found in households, which feed on humans and household pets are known as Cimex Lectularius. They are known to be attracted to carbon dioxide and the body heat that humans give off, having the ability to travel over 20 feet from hiding in order to feed, but are usually found 3 to 6 feet from the hosts. Bedbugs are mainly found in mattresses, sofas, bed frames, baseboards and under carpets. Signs of bedbugs are black dotted stains on your mattresses, pillows, couches, etc., also bite marks on exposed skin, which are usually in a line consisting of 2 to 6 bites. Many develop an itchy red welt after being bitten. Health effects that may result from being bitten include skin rashes, allergic symptoms, and psychological effects. What makes these bloodsuckers an ideal pest, is their capability to survive for extended periods without feeding for up to 1 year.
