Pavement Ant
Pavement ants are common household pests that invade homes and buildings when looking for food. They are a dark-brown to black in colour and vary in length of about 2.5 mm to 4 mm long. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. Their diet consists of an assortment of things such as insects, seeds, honey, bread and nuts. After they have found a food source, they set up trails from their nest to the source so that their colony can scrounge for more. This is how large numbers of ants trail in and infest numerous areas.
Carpenter Ant
Carpenter ants are one of the most common types of ants found in North America. They are a dark reddish to brown colour, and vary in length of about 64 mm to 250 mm. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. These types of ants are foragers, meaning that their main diet consists of other dead insects. Carpenter ants usually enter homes by digging tunnels through wood that they find softened by moisture or from being decayed. Signs of a carpenter ant infestation would include seeing sawdust-like shavings, thrown from their nests and seeing the worker ants. Because these types of ants can dig through wood, an infestation of ants would cause a lot of damages to wooden structures in your home or building.

They are usually found living underground, beneath boards, on the sidewalk and under buildings. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. These ants are omnivorous so they eat pretty much anything, but prefer sweet foods. Because of their tiny size these ants have the ability to easily squeeze through cracks and holes that are just 1 millimeter in size. Signs of infestation would include seeing the ants and their trails.
Little Black Ants
The little black ant is a tiny shiny black ant derived from North America with a length varying from 1 mm to 5 mm long. Their nests are usually found in cracks in cement, under logs, in lawns and open areas. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. These omnivorous scavengers consume pretty much anything such as small insects, sugary items, starch and fruits. Signs of infestation would include seeing the ants and their trails.

Also called grease ants because they’re attracted to greasy food, and also eat dead animals, insects, and high-protein food. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. Signs of infestation would include seeing the ants and their trails.
Citronella Ants:
These ants are called citronella ants due to their ability of being able to release pheromones when they are disturbed, which has a citronella smell. They usually build their nests in high moisture areas such as in the soil, under logs, and porches. Their main diet consists of honeydew, and other insects that feed on honeydew. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. Signs of infestation would include seeing the ants and their trails. If you have a citronella infestation, it would also be a sign of a moisture problem.
Fire Ant:
Fire ants, also known as red ants are stinging ants that attack animals by biting them and causing a painful sting. They are a blackish red in colour and vary in length of about 2 mm to 6 mm long. The main diet of these aggressive ants consists mainly of plants and seeds, but they are known to feed on other insects and small animals. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. Signs of infestation would include seeing the ants and their trails. Some individuals are sensitive to their sting and it can result in allergic reactions for some, leading to swelling, nausea and severe chest pain.
Odorous Ant:
Odorous ants also known as stink ants because when their bodies are crushed, they give off an odorous smell which smells similar to rotten coconuts. They are a dark brown or black colour and vary in lengths of about 1.5 mm to 3.2 mm long. Nests tend to be in a variety of environments, in plants, homes, buildings and underneath floors. These scavengers eat small insects and almost all household foods, especially those that are high in sugar and starch. As all other ants do, typical colonies of ants have rankings consisting of the queens and worker ants. Signs of infestation would include seeing the ants and their trails.
